Should Black Actors and Actresses Stop Going To The Academy Awards?

This week was definitely controversial as the 88th Academy Award nominees were announced. Once again Hollywood’s well-known and talented black actors and actresses were snubbed from an opportunity from winning an award for years and decades of hard work. Jada Pinkett Smith, who is the other half Smith film mogul family decided to vent her frustrations of neglect on behalf of her husband for his role in the movie, “Concussion”. Her expression and concerns about the disrespect and lack of appreciation of the talent of well-known and respected actors and actresses of the black community went viral through a video she uploaded to the world.

We must stand in our power! We must stand in our power.

It definitely touch us and reminded us of what we were aware of for years in regards to the Oscars. However, there were some black actors/actresses that questioned her motives about posting this video, none other than Janet Hubert. She had a lot to say about the Smith family and her work relationship with Will Smith.

The Smiths.

It seems like the outrage on both sides are stemming from personal hurt. Janet in regards to Will Smith not helping her and the rest of the cast from the highly-viewed show, “The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Aire” receive a higher salary due to the massive ratings they helped produce. Jada’s hurt from the slap-in-the-face discrimination her husband endured as a result of his snub from an Oscar nominee.

I know I titled the article, “Should Black Actors And Actresses Stop Going To The Academy Awards”, but the real question is, “Why Don’t We Start Embracing Our Awards That Are Done By Us?” There are other award ceremonies and events that were created by black people that exist, but not held in high regard by the mass media, but we can change that. Other races and ethnicities have their own award shows and could care less about winning an Oscar. If we operated like this we wouldn’t be so infatuated with fitting in Hollywood, because we would have our own.
